Getting Your Board Active on Social

The use of social media is a critical tool in nonprofits’ outreach toolbox.

Yet many nonprofits struggle to get their most critical ambassadors – board members – to share content on their social channels.

Don’t just cross your fingers that your board members will share your social content.

Identify any barriers that exist to them sharing on their social channels.

Check out our Twitter feed to see and implement these simple strategies to get them sharing and advocating for your mission:

  • Identify someone who can support them to get their sharing across the finish line. Who within your organization can ensure they’re set up and using social media? Who’s doing it well on the board that can mentor them?
  • Be in touch before and during the sharing request. Call them in advance of sending them social content, then walk them through sharing it if needed.
  • Report back to your board on social sharing activities. Let them know how important and valuable it is to your organization to reinforce their sharing behavior.

  • Make sure your board members understand the strategic value and audiences of different social channels. Conduct brief trainings and/or share information about different types of social media so they understand the value.
